Intervertebral Disc Disease is a leading cause of spinal pain and paralysis in dogs, disproportionately affecting chondrodystrophic breeds.
IVDD causes acute and severe pain. Dogs with disc extrusions cry out, refuse to eat, and may be reluctant to move their neck or back. Paralysis without timely surgery can become permanent. The high prevalence of IVDD in deliberately bred short-legged dogs reflects a design flaw — these breeds were selected for body shapes that almost guarantee spinal problems.
