Farmed Chicken Welfare: Housing and Density

Housing conditions and stocking density are the primary determinants of broiler chicken welfare in commercial production systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Stocking density is not just a number — it determines whether birds can walk to food and water, perform dustbathing, and avoid social conflict. At maximum legal densities, the floor space per bird is approximately an A4 sheet of paper. The welfare consequences are visible in the prevalence of leg disorders, skin lesions, and abnormal behaviour patterns. Reducing stocking density is the single most impactful welfare improvement available to broiler producers.
