Farmed rabbits face significant welfare challenges in conventional cage production systems that are increasingly subject to regulatory reform in Europe.
Conventional rabbit cage production causes chronic welfare failure. Rabbits evolved as prey animals with strong behavioural drives to flee, hide, and explore. Permanent confinement in spaces that prevent any expression of these drives causes psychological and physical suffering. The welfare case for housing reform in rabbit farming is as strong as for any other farmed species, yet public awareness and consumer pressure in this sector remain low.
