Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome is a poorly understood condition causing episodes of abnormal skin sensitivity and self-directed behaviour in cats.
FHS causes visible distress — cats appear to be responding to painful or intensely uncomfortable skin sensations during episodes. Severe cases involve self-mutilation of the tail and hindquarters. The episodic nature and variable response to different treatments suggest the syndrome may represent multiple underlying conditions grouped under one label. Whatever the mechanism, the welfare goal is reducing episode frequency and intensity through systematic investigation and treatment.
