Ringworm in Cats: Treatment and Prevention

Understanding dermatophytosis in cats, its welfare impact, treatment protocols and preventing spread to other animals and people.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

While ringworm is rarely life-threatening, the pruritus, crusting and hair loss cause significant discomfort. Treatment protocols lasting 6–8 weeks involve repeated lime-sulphur dips that are unpleasant for cats, creating a welfare tension between effective cure and treatment distress. Isolation required to prevent spread can cause social deprivation, particularly in shelter settings where affected kittens may miss critical socialisation windows. Minimising treatment sessions, using calm handling techniques and providing environmental enrichment during isolation all reduce welfare costs of an otherwise necessary treatment.
