Managing the intense acute pain of a hoof abscess in horses and understanding when veterinary intervention is essential.
Hoof abscess pain is acute and severe — horses may show signs such as sweating, elevated heart rate and refusal to bear weight that indicate profound distress. Welfare-appropriate management means not simply waiting for spontaneous resolution without pain relief. NSAIDs (phenylbutazone) reduce the inflammatory component of pain and should be used during the resolution period. Poulticing draws the abscess to burst at the coronary band or sole; once burst, pain typically resolves rapidly. Delay in diagnosis — particularly if misidentified as colic or a limb fracture — prolongs unnecessary suffering. Farrier and vet collaboration is ideal for complex cases.
