Improving outcomes and quality of life for cats living with feline immunodeficiency virus through informed management and compassionate adoption.
FIV-positive cats face a double welfare burden: the medical vulnerability that comes with immune compromise, and the shelter euthanasia risk driven by owner reluctance and misinformation. The reality is that a well-managed FIV cat living indoors with regular dental care and prompt treatment of secondary infections may live 10–15 years in good health. The welfare priority is ensuring these cats access appropriate veterinary monitoring and are adopted into informed homes rather than being killed for an often asymptomatic condition. Shelters that adopt out FIV-positive cats with proper education report high adopter satisfaction and low return rates.
