Zoo Elephant Social Management and Herd Welfare

How elephant social management in accredited zoos has evolved and what herd structure means for individual animal welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Zoo elephant welfare has undergone more scrutiny and reform than almost any other captive species, driven by public concern, scientific evidence and high-profile welfare failures. The progress made in transitioning from bare concrete paddocks to more complex, multi-elephant social environments represents genuine welfare improvement. However, even the best-managed zoo elephant lives in conditions that are necessarily a pale approximation of wild social complexity and range. Welfare monitoring must go beyond foot score and body condition to include social behaviour quality, stereotypy rates and activity budgets — all indicators of whether individual elephants are experiencing positive welfare states rather than merely surviving without gross impairment.
