Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Dairy goat welfare involves many of the same fundamental tensions as dairy cattle welfare, compounded in some respects by the lower public profile and advocacy attention the industry receives. The fate of male kids is particularly ethically challenging — slaughter at birth or within days of life is the industry norm for animals whose awareness and capacity for distress is not in dispute. Disbudding without anaesthesia causes acute pain that is easily preventable. Housing that prevents climbing, browsing and social interaction suppresses fundamental goat behavioural needs. These are all areas where welfare improvement is achievable with modest investment and clear standards.
