Farmed Bison Welfare in North America

Examining the specific welfare challenges of bison farming, including handling stress and the welfare implications of their semi-wild status.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Bison welfare challenges stem from their semi-wild status — they carry the flight response, speed and body mass of a wild ungulate while being managed in a farming context designed for domestic species. Handling-related injuries are more common in bison than cattle because the animals do not habituate to human presence in the same way, and their explosive acceleration in response to perceived threat can cause self-injury and injury to handlers. Welfare-aligned bison farming requires extensive land areas, minimal handling frequency, specialist low-stress handling design and market channels that do not require feedlot finishing. These requirements are achievable but preclude the high-density intensive systems that compromise bison welfare significantly.
