Zoo Polar Bear Welfare in a Warming World

The growing welfare challenges of keeping polar bears in captivity as Arctic conditions they evolved for become increasingly rare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Polar bear welfare in captivity is entangled with one of the most challenging conservation dilemmas: their wild habitat is disappearing faster than institutional capacity can scale. This does not automatically justify poor welfare in existing captive facilities, but it does frame the welfare conversation differently from species whose wild habitat remains viable. For polar bears currently in captivity, the welfare investment required is substantial — large complex enclosures with cold water pools, denning structures and enrichment that engages their hunting and foraging ecology — and is unevenly distributed across the global zoo population. The primary welfare improvement available at system level is concentrating polar bears in institutions that can deliver these standards, rather than distributing them widely for visitor attraction purposes.
