Horse Saddle Fit and Welfare: The Hidden Source of Back Pain

How poorly fitting saddles cause chronic musculoskeletal pain and how regular saddle fitting protects horse welfare under saddle.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Saddle fit is one of the most clinically significant and most neglected sources of chronic musculoskeletal pain in ridden horses. A saddle that contacts the withers, bridges over the lumbar region or pinches the trapezius creates pressure points that cause pain with every stride under load. The horse communicates this discomfort through behavioural signs — reluctance to be saddled, girth aversion, tension through the back, unwillingness to go forward or collect — that are frequently misinterpreted as training problems and addressed with escalating rein pressure rather than equipment assessment. Welfare-aligned riding practice treats any ridden behaviour change as a potential pain signal requiring investigation before training intervention.
