Pig Litter Management and Welfare in Neonatal Piglets

How neonatal piglet welfare is shaped by litter management, colostrum access, sow management and early intervention protocols.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Neonatal piglet welfare is a high-stakes welfare management challenge played out on an enormous scale — millions of piglets die in the first week of life annually in commercial pig production. Many of these deaths involve days of cold, hunger and weakness before death — not instantaneous loss. The selection pressure for hyperprolific sows — producing 15–18 piglets per litter — has created a structural welfare problem: litter sizes that exceed the sow's teat number create inevitable competition, and the smallest, weakest piglets — already at greatest risk — lose that competition and die. Welfare improvement requires attention to both the individual piglet and the systemic breeding pressure that has pushed litter size beyond the bounds of natural teat capacity.
