Zoo Hippopotamus Welfare: Water Access and Social Needs

What hippopotamuses require for adequate welfare in zoo settings and how their semi-aquatic biology shapes their care needs.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Hippopotamus welfare centres on one non-negotiable requirement: year-round access to warm water deep enough to allow full submersion. Hippos that cannot submerge develop skin cracking, secondary bacterial infections and chronic discomfort from the drying and irritation of exposed skin. Beyond this physical requirement, the social management of common hippopotamuses — particularly managing male aggression and ensuring appropriate group composition — represents a significant welfare challenge that only facilities with appropriate space and expertise should attempt. Pygmy hippos, being more solitary, have different social requirements that many facilities manage more successfully than common hippos.
