Examining the welfare conditions in Mediterranean sea bass farming and what standards improvements are most needed.
Sea bass welfare in Mediterranean intensive systems shares the structural problems of intensive aquaculture globally - stocking densities optimised for production efficiency at the expense of individual fish welfare. As a predatory fish with territorial behaviour, sea bass are particularly poorly suited to high-density cage culture. The welfare improvements most needed are regulatory density limits with welfare-based evidence, pre-slaughter crowding restrictions and improved handling protocols including mandatory pre-slaughter stunning.
