Aquatic Turtle Welfare in Captivity

Understanding the welfare needs of aquatic turtles kept as pets and the common husbandry failures that cause chronic suffering.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Aquatic turtle welfare failures are almost entirely a product of uninformed acquisition. The miniature turtles sold in tourist markets or as novelty gifts become 30cm adults requiring substantial space, specialised lighting, powerful filtration and 20-40 years of commitment. The welfare conditions in which most captive aquatic turtles actually live - overcrowded tanks, no UVB, inadequate filtration and no basking area - cause chronic pain from metabolic bone disease, chronic infection from poor water quality and psychological deprivation from confinement. Pre-purchase education is the single most important welfare intervention for this species.
