Zoo Sloth Bear Welfare: Enrichment and Natural Behaviour

What sloth bears require for good welfare in zoo settings and how their specialised ecology shapes their captive care needs.

Welfare Considerations

Sloth bear welfare in captivity is shaped by their highly specialised insectivorous ecology. Animals adapted for termite mound excavation, larval extraction from rotting wood and honey raiding require foraging enrichment that engages their physical and sensory capabilities - strong forelegs, long curved claws, mobile vacuum-snout and acute olfaction. Flat, featureless exhibits with simple food provision fail to engage any of these specialisations and predictably produce stereotypic pacing and lethargy. The welfare investment in species-appropriate enrichment for sloth bears is modest but transformative in outcome.
