Horse Cold-Backed Behaviour: Pain Signal or Training Issue?

Why cold-backed reactions in horses should be investigated as potential pain signals before being managed as training problems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cold-backed behaviour is one of the clearest examples of a welfare problem being systematically misclassified as a training problem in equine sport. A horse that tenses, bucks or rushes at mounting is communicating that something about the process causes pain or anticipation of pain. The welfare-appropriate first response is investigation - saddle fit assessment, veterinary examination and if indicated imaging - not application of stronger aids or restraint techniques. The normalisation of cold-backed behaviour as a character trait or training problem in certain equine disciplines represents a cultural welfare failure that perpetuates preventable suffering.
