Organic Farming and Animal Welfare: What the Evidence Shows

Reviewing what the evidence says about organic farming's actual welfare outcomes compared to conventional and other higher-welfare systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Organic certification provides meaningful welfare improvements over conventional production in most species and systems, but is not automatically the highest welfare option available. The most important welfare improvements associated with organic farming - outdoor access, lower stocking density, slower-growing breeds, antibiotic restrictions - are also provided by other welfare certification schemes that do not require organic status across all inputs. Welfare-informed purchasing decisions should look at specific welfare criteria rather than defaulting to organic as a proxy for high welfare. In some cases, a free-range or Certified Humane product addresses more specific welfare concerns than organic certification in the same species.
