Why pain management at castration, dehorning and other routine cattle procedures is a welfare imperative and what options are available.
Routine cattle procedure pain management represents one of the most clear-cut welfare improvements available in livestock farming. The evidence that castration and dehorning without pain relief cause significant acute and sub-acute pain is unambiguous; the evidence that local anaesthetic and NSAID administration effectively reduces this pain is equally clear; and the barrier to implementation - additional cost of a few pence per animal and a few minutes per procedure - is modest compared to the welfare benefit. Cultural resistance to procedure pain management, not evidence or practicality, is the primary barrier to adoption in many farming communities. Veterinary and industry leadership in normalising pain management is the most effective lever for change.
