Horse Scoliosis and Spinal Deformities: Welfare Management

How congenital and acquired spinal deformities affect horse welfare and what management approaches minimise their impact.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Horses with spinal deformities present welfare challenges that require careful individual assessment rather than categorical management decisions. A horse with mild scoliosis that has adapted successfully may have very different welfare prospects from one with severe curvature causing compensatory pain and movement restriction. The welfare assessment must consider the horse's daily comfort, capacity to perform normal equine behaviours, response to appropriate exercise and management, and trajectory over time. Horses with well-managed mild deformities can enjoy good welfare in appropriate non-ridden roles; those with severe progressive curvature may require palliative care planning.
