How antibiotic use in pig farming contributes to resistance and why welfare improvements are the most sustainable solution.
Antibiotic stewardship and pig welfare are not separate challenges but two descriptions of the same underlying problem: pigs in poor welfare conditions become sick more often and require more medication to survive. The historic use of antibiotics as a management substitute for good welfare created a cycle that generated resistant bacteria while masking the welfare failures driving disease. Sustainable reduction of antibiotic use requires investment in the welfare conditions that reduce disease incidence - appropriate space, enrichment, good nutrition and low stress - rather than simply withdrawing medication from animals that remain in conditions that make them sick.
