Dog Eye Health and Welfare in Brachycephalic Breeds

How conformational eye problems in brachycephalic dogs cause chronic welfare harm and what care reduces their impact.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Brachycephalic eye welfare is one of the clearest examples of how human preferences in dog breeding have created chronic suffering that is both widespread and largely avoidable. The protruding, inadequately protected eyes of Pugs, French Bulldogs and similar breeds are in continuous low-level contact with environmental irritants, unable to close fully during sleep in some cases, and vulnerable to injury from minor physical contact that would cause no harm to a normocephalic dog. The corneal pain from chronic exposure keratopathy, ulceration and trichiasis is real and persistent. The welfare solution at the individual level is vigilant monitoring and prompt veterinary treatment; at the population level it is selection away from extreme conformations.
