Elbow dysplasia is a leading cause of chronic forelimb lameness in dogs, particularly large breeds, causing lifelong pain and requiring careful management.
Elbow dysplasia causes persistent pain that often goes unrecognised because dogs mask lameness. Affected dogs may have reduced activity, changed gait, and difficulty rising that owners attribute to normal ageing. Without treatment, pain progresses as arthritis develops in the damaged joint. The welfare burden extends across the dog's entire life, requiring ongoing pain management, physiotherapy, and exercise modification. Overbreeding of affected lines perpetuates unnecessary suffering across generations.
