Feline idiopathic cystitis, the most common cause of lower urinary tract signs in young cats, is strongly linked to stress and requires a holistic management approach.
Feline idiopathic cystitis causes acute urinary pain and the distress of frequent, unsuccessful attempts to urinate. Affected cats associate litter trays with pain and may eliminate outside them, compounding the stress of the situation. Without recognition that stress is the primary driver, owners focus on diet or medication while the underlying environmental cause continues. Male cats with complete obstruction suffer extreme pain and die without emergency treatment. The welfare key to this condition is recognising that cats are sensitive to environmental stressors that humans often do not perceive as problematic, and that environment modification is treatment.
