Wild Coyote Welfare: Persecution, Coexistence and Urban Adaptation

Coyotes are one of the most persecuted wildlife species in North America, yet they demonstrate remarkable resilience and play important ecological roles that make coexistence strategies essential.

Welfare Considerations

Coyotes killed through population control programmes suffer the full range of trap and poison-related welfare harms. Leg-hold traps cause injury, prolonged distress and exposure before the animal is dispatched. Poison-based control causes slow, painful death through anticoagulant or secondary poisoning. The welfare irony is that this massive annual killing is largely counterproductive - lethal control fails to reduce populations long-term because of compensatory reproduction, meaning the same suffering is inflicted year after year with no lasting population effect. The animals killed are individuals with established family bonds who play ecological roles in their territories.
