Addison disease (hypoadrenocorticism) is an endocrine disorder in dogs requiring lifelong mineralocorticoid and sometimes glucocorticoid supplementation.
Undiagnosed Addison disease causes episodic severe illness and life-threatening crises. Once diagnosed and appropriately managed, welfare is generally excellent. The challenge is ensuring consistent medication adherence. Dogs need additional stress-dose glucocorticoids during illness or significant stress events to prevent crises. Owner education is central to welfare outcomes, ensuring families recognise early signs of crisis and respond appropriately.
