The nutritional quality of cattle feed has direct welfare implications through effects on digestion, health, and behaviour in beef production systems.
Dietary acidosis causes significant pain and discomfort through rumen inflammation, lameness from laminitis, and liver damage. Cattle experiencing SARA show reduced feed intake, behavioural changes, and increased veterinary treatment. Barley and corn-based feedlot diets designed to maximise growth can compromise welfare when poorly managed. Including adequate roughage and carefully managing concentrate levels are important welfare interventions in beef systems.
