Mink farming raises serious welfare concerns due to the inability of this semi-aquatic carnivore to meet its behavioural needs in standard cage systems.
Mink in standard cage systems cannot fulfil fundamental behavioural needs including swimming, exploration, and hunting. The resulting frustration drives high rates of stereotypic behaviour and self-injury. Studies show farmed mink have chronically elevated stress hormone levels. Fur farming cannot be conducted humanely within economically viable parameters using current systems. The growing international ban on mink farming reflects recognition that adequate welfare is not achievable at scale in this industry.
