Injection site sarcomas are aggressive tumours that develop at vaccination or injection sites in cats, requiring awareness, early detection, and improved prevention strategies.
FISS is a devastating diagnosis associated with significant suffering from rapid tumour growth, ulceration, and metastatic disease. Aggressive surgical resection causing significant tissue loss is the primary treatment. The welfare trade-off between vaccination benefits and small sarcoma risk is complex. Using non-adjuvanted vaccines where available and injecting at sites that allow limb amputation if sarcoma develops are welfare-informed choices.
