Urethral obstruction is a life-threatening emergency in male cats that causes severe pain and requires immediate veterinary intervention to relieve the blockage.
Urethral obstruction causes severe abdominal pain from bladder distension, combined with nausea and the systemic effects of uraemia. Cats with obstruction are in significant distress and deteriorate rapidly. The welfare emergency requires immediate relief of the obstruction. Post-unblocking care is intensive and cats require significant nursing support. Recurrent obstruction causes repeated episodes of suffering and stress, making surgical intervention appropriate for frequently recurrent cases.
