Capybaras are increasingly kept as exotic pets and in managed zoo populations, with specific welfare needs related to their semi-aquatic lifestyle and social behaviour.
Capybaras kept as pets or in poorly equipped zoo exhibits without adequate water access experience significant welfare deprivation. They are unable to thermoregulate effectively without swimming access. Social isolation causes chronic stress. The novelty-driven exotic pet trade frequently fails to provide species-appropriate care. Even in zoos, the space requirements and water infrastructure needed for capybara welfare are substantial and often not provided.
