Livestock guardian dogs protect flocks from predators but face their own welfare challenges from isolation, injuries, and inadequate care in some pastoral systems.
Livestock guardian dogs living permanently with flocks may receive inadequate veterinary care if producers focus primarily on livestock health. Wounds from predator conflicts may go untreated. Inadequate nutrition for working dogs, particularly in harsh environments, compromises welfare. Dogs that are poorly socialised during development may show fear or anxiety toward humans making veterinary care difficult. Good welfare requires regular health monitoring, appropriate nutrition, and socialisation.
