Vestibular disease causes sudden severe balance disturbance in cats, appearing alarming but often resolving spontaneously with supportive care.
Acute vestibular disease is extremely distressing for cats, who appear profoundly disoriented and distressed. The sudden loss of balance is frightening and causes significant acute suffering. Many cats are so disoriented they cannot walk or stand. Supportive care including antiemetics, a safe confined environment to prevent falls, and assisted feeding and hydration maintains welfare during the acute phase. The good prognosis for idiopathic vestibular disease means welfare outcomes are generally positive with appropriate support.
