Dog Prostate Disease and Welfare

Prostatic disease in entire male dogs causes significant discomfort and health problems, with castration being the most effective prevention and treatment.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

BPH causes chronic discomfort from difficulty passing urine and faeces. Prostatic abscesses cause acute severe pain and systemic illness. The discomfort of established prostatic disease may be tolerated for extended periods before owners seek veterinary attention. Castration is a definitive, highly effective treatment for most prostatic conditions except carcinoma. Medical management with finasteride provides an alternative for breeding dogs but is less reliably effective.
