Wild Leatherback Turtle Nesting Welfare

Leatherback sea turtles undertake epic migrations and face welfare challenges at nesting beaches from artificial lighting, beach traffic, and climate-driven temperature changes.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Hatchlings disoriented by artificial lighting wander toward roads and buildings rather than the sea, dying from exhaustion, dehydration, or vehicle strikes. Nesting females are disturbed by beach traffic and lighting, causing nest abandonment or nest site shifts to less suitable locations. Warmer sand temperatures from climate change affect embryo development and produce almost exclusively female hatchlings. Each welfare intervention at nesting beaches has multiplied impact given sea turtle longevity and low reproductive rates.
