Feline aortic thromboembolism (FATE) is an acutely painful and distressing complication of heart disease that requires immediate pain management and welfare assessment.
FATE is one of the most acutely painful conditions encountered in companion animal practice. The sudden loss of blood flow to the hindlimbs causes ischaemic pain equivalent to severe limb ischaemia. The combination of severe pain, loss of function, and fear creates acute suffering of high intensity. Immediate aggressive pain management is the welfare priority. Quality of life assessment is essential for survival decisions given the severity of the condition and significant re-occurrence risk.
