Wild Pronghorn Migration and Fence Barriers

Pronghorn undertake the second longest land migration in North America but face severe disruption from fencing that prevents their movement and causes welfare problems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pronghorn entangled in barbed wire experience lacerations, broken limbs, and death from inability to free themselves. Fencing that blocks migration routes forces animals into suboptimal habitat with insufficient winter food, causing nutritional stress and starvation. Each winter when migration routes are blocked, hundreds or thousands of pronghorn may die from starvation that would not occur in connected habitat. Fence modification is a direct welfare intervention that allows safe migration.
