Patent ductus arteriosus is one of the most common congenital heart defects in dogs, and early surgical or catheter-based repair prevents heart failure and dramatically improves prognosis.
Puppies with unrepaired PDA progressively develop congestive heart failure, with associated exercise intolerance, respiratory distress, and ultimately a poor and premature death. Early diagnosis through cardiac auscultation detecting the classic machinery murmur is straightforward, and prompt referral for repair offers an outstanding prognosis. Delayed diagnosis and treatment condemns affected puppies to progressive cardiac compromise and preventable suffering. Genetic counseling of affected dogs reduces future incidence in predisposed breeds.
