Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive, incurable spinal cord disease in dogs requiring attentive supportive care to maintain quality of life as long as possible.
Dogs with DM face a gradual but inexorable loss of mobility and independence. Importantly, they typically do not experience pain from the neurological degeneration itself, remaining mentally bright. This creates a nuanced welfare picture: the dog's psychological quality of life may be good even as physical function declines. Dedicated supportive care including harnesses, carts, pressure sore prevention, and bladder management enables many DM dogs to enjoy extended periods of good welfare. Euthanasia timing should be guided by quality of life assessments rather than mobility alone.
