Modern commercial turkeys have been selectively bred to such extremes that many cannot reproduce naturally or walk without pain, representing a significant welfare crisis.
Commercial turkey breeding represents an extreme case of welfare compromise through genetic selection. Birds grow so rapidly that their skeletal and cardiovascular systems cannot keep pace, causing chronic pain, respiratory distress, and mobility impairment in millions of individuals. The inability to reproduce naturally means that these animals exist in a permanent state that precludes a complete natural life cycle. Turkeys raised under these conditions spend their short lives in chronic discomfort from the very body shape that defines their commercial value.
