Dietary management is the cornerstone of chronic kidney disease treatment in cats, and appropriate nutrition can significantly extend comfortable life for affected animals.
Cats with CKD experience nausea, lethargy, and reduced appetite from uremic toxin accumulation. Inadequate dietary management accelerates kidney deterioration and extends the period of discomfort. The challenge is that therapeutic renal diets are often less palatable, and forcing diet changes in anorexic cats causes additional stress and risks hepatic lipidosis. Careful dietary transition with attention to palatability and appetite is as much a welfare issue as a medical one.
