Horse Laminitis Emergency Management

Laminitis is a painful and potentially crippling hoof condition in horses that constitutes a veterinary emergency, with outcomes heavily dependent on rapid intervention.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Laminitis causes intense, throbbing pain described by veterinarians as equivalent to having fingernails torn away. Affected horses are unable to bear weight normally and may be reluctant to move at all. In severe rotation or sinking, the coffin bone can penetrate the sole of the hoof - a catastrophic outcome. Even horses that recover from acute laminitis may have permanent hoof changes predisposing them to recurrence. The condition is frequently caused by preventable management mistakes, making it a particularly important welfare target.
