Dog Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia

Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia destroys platelets in dogs, creating life-threatening bleeding risk that requires emergency immunosuppressive treatment.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Dogs with severe IMT experience spontaneous bleeding that can be immediately life-threatening - internal hemorrhage, gastrointestinal bleeding, or sudden brain hemorrhage. The visual signs of petechiae (pinpoint hemorrhages) and bruising covering the body are dramatic indicators of physiological crisis. High-dose corticosteroid treatment causes its own side effects including extreme hunger, thirst, and behavioral changes. Even after platelet recovery, the anxiety of potential relapse affects both dog and owner quality of life.
