Wobbler syndrome (cervical spondylomyelopathy) causes spinal cord compression in large and giant breed dogs, resulting in progressive weakness and incoordination.
Wobbler syndrome causes progressive neurological disability that affects dogs' ability to walk, play, and maintain normal independence. The wobbling, unsteady gait causes falls that can result in injury. Pain from spinal cord compression may be difficult to assess but contributes to reduced activity and altered behavior. Giant breed dogs with a naturally shorter lifespan face these problems while still in what should be their prime years. Surgical outcomes are improved with early intervention before significant muscle atrophy and secondary complications develop.
