Intestinal intussusception occurs when one segment of intestine telescopes into another, causing a rapidly progressing obstruction requiring emergency surgery.
Intussusception causes intense abdominal pain from intestinal strangulation. The progression from discomfort to tissue death and peritonitis is rapid without surgical intervention. Young puppies, who are physiologically less resilient, decompensate quickly. The intensity of pain and speed of deterioration make this a condition where owner recognition and immediate action directly determines welfare outcomes. Deworming and vaccination against intestinal viruses reduces trigger risk and thereby prevents this painful condition in many cases.
