Cat Feline Orofacial Pain Syndrome

Feline orofacial pain syndrome causes episodes of extreme facial pain in cats, particularly Burmese, that are distressing to witness and challenging to manage.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

FOPS episodes are among the most distressing welfare situations in feline medicine. Cats in the midst of an episode are clearly in extreme pain - frantically pawing at their faces, rolling, vocalizing, and sometimes seriously injuring themselves. The episodic nature means cats may live normally between episodes but experience repeated bouts of severe facial pain. Management is often incomplete - gabapentin reduces but may not eliminate episodes. Identifying and removing triggers including dental disease and stress sources is essential to reducing the frequency and intensity of suffering.
