Dehorning of cattle is one of the most common painful procedures in livestock farming, with hot-iron disbudding of calves and adult dehorning causing significant welfare concerns.
Dehorning without analgesia causes acute pain that is clearly visible in cortisol elevation and behavioral responses. Post-procedural pain lasts 24-72 hours without NSAID treatment. Adult dehorning is a much more invasive procedure causing greater immediate and prolonged suffering. The widespread adoption of polled genetics offers a path to eliminating the procedure entirely - calves that grow up without horns need never be dehorned. Until the industry transitions to polled genetics, combining local anesthetic with NSAIDs represents the minimum welfare standard for any dehorning procedure.
