Elbow hygromas are fluid-filled swellings developing over bony prominences in large breed dogs, causing welfare concerns and being preventable through appropriate bedding.
Elbow hygromas begin as painless curiosities but become genuine welfare problems when infected. Infected hygromas are painful, require repeated surgical intervention, and create prolonged discomfort during healing. The preventable nature of the condition makes it particularly important from a welfare standpoint - orthopedic bedding and elbow protection padding prevent hygromas from developing in predisposed breeds. Large breed dog owners who provide appropriate resting surfaces eliminate this welfare risk almost entirely.
