Sumatran Elephant Conservation and Welfare

Sumatran elephants are critically endangered, facing rapid habitat loss, human-elephant conflict, and poaching threats on the island of Sumatra.

Key Facts

Sumatran elephants lost over 70 percent of their habitat in one generation
Fewer than 2,400 Sumatran elephants remain in the wild
They are listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN
Human-elephant conflict kills dozens of elephants annually
Palm oil plantation expansion is a major driver of habitat destruction

Welfare Considerations

Sumatran elephants face chronic stress from habitat fragmentation, conflict with humans, and the trauma of losing family members to poaching. Conflict elephants are sometimes killed, captured, or kept in substandard welfare conditions at elephant camps. Conservation of forest corridors and conflict mitigation programs are essential.
